Get Behind the Wheel Sooner: How to Fast-Track Your Driving Test in 2025

Waiting to take your practical driving test in the UK can feel like an eternity, with some DVSA test centres in 2025 quoting wait times of up to five months. If you are itching to hit the road and claim your driving freedom, these delays can be a real buzzkill. But there are smart, practical ways to find an earlier test slot. Here is how to go about it.

Updated for the 2026 DVSA booking rules: since 12 May 2026, only the learner can book, change or cancel their own practical test. Since 31 March 2026 each booking can only be changed twice, and from 9 June 2026 a test can only be moved to one of the three test centres nearest the original booking. The tips below reflect these rules.

Why Are Driving Test Waits So Long?

The struggle is real, and here is why:

  • Everyone wants to drive. Demand for tests is sky-high as more people than ever want to get licensed.
  • Not enough examiners. Some test centres are still short-staffed, making it harder to clear the backlog.
  • Slots vanish fast. New test appointments are often snapped up in minutes, leaving latecomers stuck.

Knowing what is causing the delays helps you plan smarter.

Top Tips to Fast-Track Your Driving Test

Book as soon as you pass your theory test

Do not wait until you are a pro behind the wheel to book your test. As soon as you pass your theory test, book the most suitable date available. You can move it later if you need more practice, but remember you only get two changes per booking, so use them wisely.

Manage your own booking

Driving schools and third-party services can no longer book or change a test on your behalf, so you manage your own booking on the official GOV.UK service. Your instructor can still advise you on when you are ready and which dates make sense. At Express Pass, Early Test Booking Support is available: we help you plan your lessons around your test date and tell you honestly when you are ready.

Check at different times of day

DVSA releases new test slots throughout the day. Check the official booking service early in the morning, during lunch breaks or in the evening to catch freshly released appointments. Persistence pays off!

Be flexible, within the rules

Do not limit yourself to one specific date or time; weekday and off-peak slots are often easier to find. If you move your test to a different centre, it must be one of the three nearest to your original booking, so choose a centre you can realistically practise around.

Consider an intensive course

Want to speed things up? Intensive courses pack your lessons and test preparation into a short period, often one to two weeks, so you are test-ready sooner. You still book the practical test yourself, and your course can be planned around the date you have.

Are fast-track tests legit?

An earlier test is simply an earlier slot booked through the official DVSA system. Steer clear of third-party services charging high fees for "guaranteed" dates. Since May 2026 they are not allowed to book tests for learners at all, and you should only ever pay the official DVSA fee.

Get on the Road Sooner

Long wait times do not have to derail your driving plans. By booking early, checking regularly for cancellations and getting test-ready with the right lessons, you give yourself the best chance of an earlier pass.
