Phase 1 — Starting Out

Getting comfortable in the car, moving off and stopping safely

Steps 1–5
1
🪑
Cockpit Drill
The very first thing you do in every lesson
Why it matters: Every drive starts here. Getting your cockpit right means you're safe, comfortable, and in control before the engine starts.

🚗
Moving Off
Pulling away safely every single time
Key habit: Always check the blind spot over your right shoulder before pulling away — mirrors alone won't show a cyclist or pedestrian.

Stopping Safely
Controlled, smooth and well-timed stops
Remember: Mirrors before brakes — always check what's behind before you slow down. A vehicle may be close behind you.

⚙️
Gears & Controls
Smooth gear changes without looking down
Instructor tip: Gears are for going, brakes are for slowing. Never use the gearbox to slow down — always brake first, then select a lower gear.
Use clutch smoothly — no sudden drops
Change gear by feel, not by looking
Palms to the windows for 1st and 2nd gear
5
🪞
Mirrors & Observations
See everything, miss nothing
The rule: Check mirrors every 5–10 seconds and always before signalling, changing speed, or changing direction.
Interior mirror — big picture
Left mirror — cyclists and nearside
Right mirror — overtaking vehicles
Blind spots — always physically check
🟩

Phase 2 — Building Skills

Junctions, roundabouts and road positioning

Steps 6–11
6
🔄
Junctions — Turning Left & Right
The most tested skill on the driving test
Key phrase: "If you can walk across, you can turn across" — use this to judge safe gaps when turning right at a junction.

Roundabouts
Priority, lane position and exit signals
Golden rule: Give way to traffic already on the roundabout coming from the right. Signal left as you pass the exit before yours.
1st exit — approach in left lane, signal left
2nd exit — approach in left lane, no signal in
3rd exit+ — approach in right lane, signal right in
8
📍
Road Positioning
Where your car sits on the road matters
Default position: Keep approximately 1 metre from the kerb on a normal road. Move left for passing hazards, right to see past parked vehicles.
Keep a door's width from parked cars
Less space = less speed
Position early — don't rush last-minute changes
9
🚦
Traffic Lights & Signals
Reacting correctly every time
Amber means stop unless you are so close that stopping would be dangerous. Never accelerate through amber.
Red + Amber = prepare to go (don't go yet)
Check mirrors before stopping at lights
Observe for cyclists on left when pulling away
10
🅿️
Parking & Bay Parking
Forward bay, reverse bay and parallel park
Examiner tip: Always check all mirrors and blind spots before and during any parking manoeuvre. Slow speed = maximum control.
Reverse bay — use reference points on the car
Parallel park — stay within 2 car lengths of space
Forward bay — check before reversing out
11
🔁
Turnabout (3-Point Turn)
Turning around in a limited space
Key: Observations are everything here. Check all around before each move. The examiner is watching your all-round awareness, not just your steering.
Move forward — steer right, stop before kerb
Reverse — steer left, check all around
Forward — straighten up and drive away
🟧

Phase 3 — Town Driving

Busy roads, hazard awareness and independent driving

Steps 12–16
12
⚠️
Hazard Perception
Spot danger before it develops
Think ahead: Look for clues — parked buses, school gates, ball on pavement. A hazard is anything that could make you change speed or direction.
Move your eyes every few seconds
Plan for the worst, expect the best
Look early, plan early — slow in, fast out
13
🚶
Pedestrian Crossings
Zebra, pelican, puffin and toucan crossings
Zebra: Give way to any pedestrian on or waiting at the crossing. Pelican: Flashing amber — give way to pedestrians still crossing.
Never wave pedestrians across — just stop and wait
Don't overtake approaching a crossing
Toucan — cyclists can cross too
14
🛣️
Dual Carriageways
Higher speeds, lane discipline and joining
Key rule: Keep left unless overtaking. Match the speed of traffic when joining. The right lane is for overtaking only — return to the left when clear.
Two-second gap minimum in dry — four in wet
Check mirrors well before moving right
National speed limit = 70mph on dual carriageway
15
🗺️
Independent Driving
Following sat-nav or road signs alone
On test: 20 minutes of independent driving using sat-nav or traffic signs. Missing a turn is not a fault — just continue safely and follow the next instruction.
Safe driving is more important than perfect navigation
Don't rush a turn — carry on and re-route
Practise using sat-nav in lessons before test day
16
🚧
Meeting Oncoming Traffic
Narrow roads and passing places
Who gives way? The vehicle closest to a passing place or with more space behind them. Never assume the other driver will stop.
Pull left and stop if there is doubt
Flash headlights = "after you" — never means "I'm going"
Show, slow and go
🟥

Phase 4 — Test Ready

Motorways, emergency stops and test preparation

Steps 17–20
17
🛤️
Motorway Driving
Smart motorways, lanes and joining
Motorway rule: Keep left unless overtaking. Never stop on the motorway unless it is an emergency. Use the hard shoulder only in a breakdown.
Speed limit 70mph — variable limits on smart motorways
Two-second rule minimum — more in poor conditions
Red X above a lane = lane closed, leave immediately
18
🆘
Emergency Stop
Stop as quickly and safely as possible
On test: React immediately to the examiner's signal. Brake hard and straight. ABS will prevent wheel lock — keep pressing, do not pump the pedal.
Brake firmly — both feet simultaneously (clutch last)
Keep steering straight — do not swerve
Check mirrors and blind spots before moving off again
19
🔧
Show Me Tell Me
Vehicle safety questions on test day
On test: One Tell Me before you drive (verbal answer) and one Show Me while driving (physical demonstration). One minor fault allowed across both.
21 possible questions — 7 Show Me, 14 Tell Me
Know: oil dipstick, coolant tank, tyre tread, fog lights
Practise all 21 with our interactive tool

20
🏁
Test Day Preparation
Everything you need to know before you go
Pass mark: No more than 15 minor faults, zero serious or dangerous faults. The test lasts about 40 minutes including the Show Me Tell Me questions.
Bring provisional licence on the day
Arrive 10 minutes early — don't rush
Think ahead, stay ahead — less rush, more control
