Sound Familiar?

The Bits of Manual Driving That Trip People Up

  • Stalling as you pull away at a busy junction
  • Rolling back on a hill start
  • Grabbing the wrong gear on a roundabout
  • Looking down at the gear stick instead of the road
  • Riding the clutch in slow Manchester traffic

Every one of these is a timing habit β€” and habits are trainable.

How We Coach It

Clutch first, on quiet roads, until it is muscle memory.

We hold you at walking pace on the bite point until you feel it rather than count it, then build up: hill start routine, gear planning before junctions, then roundabouts and dual carriageways. Only once that is reliable do we move onto local test routes. If manual still is not clicking after a few honest attempts, we can move you across to automatic driving lessons at the same hourly rate.

What a Manual Licence Lets You Drive

The lessons are harder work. The licence is worth more. Here is the practical difference once you have passed.

Manual takes most learners longer, and that is worth planning for. Not sure which way to go? Our course recommender asks a few questions and suggests a transmission and lesson count.

Simple Process

How Manual Lessons Work

  1. Choose manual

Pick hourly or a package and select manual on the booking form. New students start with the Β£60 first two hours.

  2. Book online or call

Send the form or ring 07587 867373. We match you with a manual instructor covering your area.

  3. Master the clutch

Quiet roads, slow speeds and repetition until moving off, changing gear and hill starts stop needing your full concentration.

  4. Move onto test routes

Junctions, roundabouts, dual carriageways, then the roads around your local test centre and a mock test before the real one.

Why Learners Choose It

Why Learn in a Manual

One licence, every car

Pass in a manual and you can drive both transmissions. No restriction, no second test later on.

Better for work driving

Vans, pool cars and delivery roles are still largely manual. A manual licence keeps those jobs open to you.

The whole used market

First cars are cheapest at the manual end of the forecourt, and you will not be hunting for the automatic version.

Proper car control

Clutch, gears and engine braking give you a feel for the car that carries over to everything you drive afterwards.

Where We Teach

Manual Lessons Across Greater Manchester

Our manual instructors cover 31 areas of Greater Manchester, including Cheetham Hill, Crumpsall, Harpurhey, Chadderton, Salford, Eccles and West Didsbury. Hills, tram crossings and stop-start city traffic are exactly the conditions that expose weak clutch control β€” so that is where we practise, rather than avoiding them.

Already have a test date? Tell your instructor which centre it is at and your lessons will be built around those routes and their busier junctions.

Common Questions

Manual Driving Lesson FAQs

How much do manual driving lessons cost in Manchester?

Manual lessons are Β£38 per hour with a 2-hour minimum booking. New students can take their first 2 hours for Β£60 instead of Β£76. Packages are Β£360 for 10 hours, Β£550 for 15 hours, Β£720 for 20 hours and Β£1,050 for 30 hours, and unused hours are refunded.

How many manual driving lessons will I need to pass?

DVSA guidance suggests the average learner takes around 45 hours of professional tuition plus private practice before passing, and manual learners usually sit at the higher end because clutch and gear work take time to become automatic. Your instructor will give you an honest estimate once they have seen you drive.

I keep stalling and cannot find the bite point. Can you help?

Yes, and it is the single most common thing we coach. We start on quiet roads with slow, repeated clutch drills so you learn the bite point by feel rather than by counting, then add hill starts, junctions and traffic once it is reliable. Stalling is almost always a timing habit, not a lack of ability.

What can I drive with a manual licence?

A manual pass covers both transmissions, so you can drive manual and automatic cars without any further test. An automatic pass restricts you to automatic cars only until you take a manual practical test.

Is the practical test harder in a manual car?

The test is the same in either car: the same routes, manoeuvres and marking. In a manual you also have to manage the clutch and gears while you do it, so there are more places a fault can creep in. That is why our manual lessons spend more time on gear planning at junctions and roundabouts.

Do you offer manual intensive driving courses?

Yes. Our intensive driving courses run in manual and automatic at the same price, condensing your hours into a shorter block instead of weekly lessons.

I failed my manual driving test. Can you help me pass next time?

Yes. Bring your test feedback to the first lesson and your instructor will work through the faults you were marked on rather than starting again from scratch. We also have a page for lessons after failing a driving test.

Which areas and test centres do your manual instructors cover?

We cover 31 areas of Greater Manchester and teach on the routes around the Cheetham Hill, Chadderton, Bredbury, Bury, Rochdale, West Didsbury, Bolton and Sale test centres.
